Adobe has officially launched a preview of Project Stardust, a next-generation AI-powered photo-editing engine set to revolutionize digital photography. This launch comes after a series of leaks earlier this month, building anticipation among Adobe users and AI enthusiasts.
What is Project Stardust?
Powered by the newly launched Firefly Model 2, Project Stardust is an innovative photo-editing tool that allows users to efficiently perform tasks such as object deletion, background alterations, and more. The crux of the project lies in the democratization of creativity, allowing anyone to manipulate images using Adobe’s advanced AI tools.
However, I’d like to point out that this is currently only a public preview of the technologies Adobe is developing. Whether these features will be incorporated into a final product is still being determined. Despite this, given that Stardust essentially encapsulates existing Firefly-based AI tools under a new moniker, it is likely that we will witness more of its capabilities shortly.
How Does it Work?
In essence, Stardust amalgamates Adobe’s object recognition models with existing AI-powered features like generative fill. This feature plays when an object is moved, and something needs to take its place. Adobe’s director of product management for Project Stardust showcased a live demo of the service, demonstrating a seamless and intuitive user experience.
To begin, users can upload their photo or have Firefly generate one. Firefly then automatically analyzes the image, creating layers for its identified objects. Manipulating these layers is as simple as drag-and-drop, with the AI tools filling in any gaps. Adding new things to a scene is also straightforward, with the service offering four different options for every prompt. According to Adobe, over a dozen other AI models power Stardust, each contributing to its diverse features.
Comparisons and Implications
In many ways, Stardust mirrors Google’s Magic Editor on Android, aiming to transform complex photo editing tasks into effortless operations. The rapid progression of this technology might be why many are no longer astonished by such innovations. With Google already demonstrating similar capabilities, the conversation has shifted from marveling at the technology to contemplating its implications for photography.
Undoubtedly, this advancement in photo editing technology would have seemed like magic just a few years ago. However, it is a tangible reality, ushering us into a new era of digital photography. As AI continues to evolve and mature, the possibilities for creative expression and innovation in photography are limitless.
